Daily Outfit - School Gate Chic

It was the first day of school and the beginning of a whole new era yesterday. Miss Four was all fancied up in her little dress and black polished Mary Janes. Her bag was filled with snacks and her heart high with hopes as she went off to meet all her new friends.

No uniform for this year. They are "highly recommended" to wear the official school tracksuit, but in my opinion that is asking for trouble. Imagine teaching them this young that wearing a tracksuit for anything other than the gym is acceptable! (puts hand to forehead in a faint)

And while fruit is the standard snacking fare, something a little more cheerful was required for such a momentous day.

As for me, I knew I had a whole new challenge on my hands with school gate dressing. Given that where I live the standard mum attire is either capri pants and t-shirts, or the full Ed Hardy soccer mum look, I knew that whatever I wore I was bound to stand out. But not wanting to over do it, I did my version of jeans and t-shirt with these vintage style pants I knocked up and one of my favorite new blouses. It is actually even more comfortable than a jeans and t-shirt combo, and in my opinion looks a million times better. A quick twist with the hair and up into a french roll, and I'm done.

Outfit Details: Blouse - thrifted (no label), Pants - made by me, Shoes - Rohde

Now the biggest challenge will be adjusting to a whole new routine. Packing lunches, leaving early, parent teacher meetings, bake sales... I wonder how long the enthusiasm lasts?

Hope she enjoys her first day. I found the enthusiasm wore off after about a week!

I hope it all went well - love both of your outfits!

Gorgeous outfit, and what a cute frock on your daughter. Good luck to her

If I ever had to go through childhood again, I'd want you for my mum SKM! Those poor dears in their capri pants won't know what's hit them - I'm sure you'll look like a movie star at the school gate, and let's face it, someone has to provide some inspiration. Miss Four will be so proud :)

those pants look amazing! such a perfect and flattering fit. did you use a ready-made pattern or draft yourself?

the ed hardy soccer mums will lose it (and hopefully their fake tan) when they see what a real lady looks like!

SKM, how tall are you? Navy pants look fabulous on you and this little shorty is wondering if they'll look as good on her!

PS: Is it too much to ask for a hair tutorial on this look?! It's beautiful!!

Allo,

Your daughter looks fabulous!!! It`s interesting to know that in Australia school is starting, whereas here (Canada) it`s middle of the school year already!

My son (4) is attending a private school twice a week. Here, children start kindergarden school when they`re 5... unless you send them to a private school...

Anyway, have a good day "downunder" from "upabove" ;)

2 great outfits. I hope there were no tears at the school gate.

Is there another hair tutorial in the offing for that style?

Spiragirl: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for 12 years of enthusiasm.
Ruthie: Yes, she's loving it.
Rachael: She picked the fabric for that and about 12 others at the same time.
Nicole: Wow, thank you. That means a lot considering you've seen me in action.
Habourmaster: I actually designed and made the pants myself. I'm open to taking orders and thinking of listing them in my Etsy shop if anyone is interested.
Emer: I'm 5 foot 4 inches, and yes I have a long list of hair tutorials to get through now that Miss is at school.
Meredith: Yes, it is a private school. She will be attending full time (thank god!) so some sanity will be returned to my days. :)
Salla: Oh that is such a lovely compliment thank you!
Atomic mama: So long as the patterns you have done have pockets or a fly, then they should be a cinch! Give it a try.
Floraposte: No, no tears at all. Just a "you can go now mummy."
Yes, I'll add this style to my tutorial list.

The pig in the lunchbox is awesome! Did you pop in a wee "I love you" note as well? My Mum used to do that.....it was so embarrasing when I got older, but I still (secretly) loved it.
You both look tres stylish, like mother like daughter xxx

wait! and you're only 5'4" (not that that's a bad thing)! you look much taller in photos.

As a fellow Aussie school gate mum, I avoid the dreaded trackie (except for cleaning the bathroom) at all costs. Your daughter will be very proud of you. And, what a beautiful example you are setting for her. My daughter, who started year 7 last week, often tells me how lovely I look and I love that she says so. Other mums will often stare at me or say "why are you so dressed up" or "where are you off too?". I usually ignore them amd and smile. In future I'll inquire as to why they are so dressed down?

wow i just love the blouse! it is so divine! and you make far a fabulously understated elegant mother (which i think should become more of the norm!).

i am so tired of seeing mum's in nothing but beige capri pants and polo tops from myer's 'mummy' division! just because you're a mother doesn't mean you have to lose your own identity or fashion sense! well done!

we had first day on mon - year 1 and kindy. i'm glad my kindy girl will only be going 2 days a week this year tho - don't think i'm ready for BOTH of them to be fulltime yet!!!

we don't have any particularly fascinating dressers either and as others have noted, if i see another pair of capri pants...

I LOVE what your daughter is wearing (and must admit I've always been curious to see how the girls are dressed and I wasn't disappointed!), and I ADORE what you're wearing!! Simply wonderful!!

Wow! You look Fantastic! I am trying to get out of the Jeans and a T-Shirt uniform that I sadly adopted in Fashion Design school. I hope that by the time my little girl is ready for her first day of school I will look as great as you do.

Wow. You are so beautiful. Your skin looks wonderful. You look like one of them glamorous 1960s Hollywood beauties. Can I link you? Thanks!

Love,
Donna

You do both look fab. Miss Four will be a fashion leader from her first day - lucky girl. And that piggy cake - I hope she was suitably grateful!

I happened upon your blog while searching for pictures of Betty bangs, and I love it! Your skin looks FABULOUS in these pictures - what brand of foundation/concealer do you use?

Your daughter looks so lovely, and I'm sure she appreciates that her mummy looks the best of all the mums at school! Those capri wearers will will be wishing they stepped out in something much prettier! Love that you dressed your daughter in a pretty dress too, instead of yucky trackpants: setting her up to be just as stylish as you when she grows up :) xx
