The Long Promised Hair Tutorial

Finally, I have some time to myself and the technology gods have smiled on me. Here is my first hair tutorial showing you how I did my hair in yesterday's Daily Outfit photos. The tutorial runs for about 10 minutes, (the hair only takes about 5 minutes without all the chatter), so kick off your kittens and pour yourself a dirty martini. I'll be bringing you more hair and other tutorials in the future, so this should whet your appetite for now. Any feed back or questions are more than welcome.

gosh you are SO australian. haha! i mean, your accent! :)

that roll is so cute. i do it sometimes but i usually roll it to the back for a more punk kind of look. i'll try doing it to the side next time! it looks good on you.

and i love how you giggled a little when you talked about your husband. hee hee! so cute!

Love your tutorial, I tried bobby pins once and it was a disaster, you make it look so easy (my hair is a very similar texture and length to yours) I'll try again and be a bit more persistant next time.
You sound just like I thought you would and yes, VERY australian, lovely accent.

Thank-you thank-you thank-you for doing this. I'm going off to play with my hair now.

Iiieh, I really want to see this, but my computer won't play it :(

Just left you a long comment and Blogger ate it! The upshot of it was that you are fantastic on camera and they need to give you a TV show. So much poise and naturalness, SKM. Oh, and your voice is lovely too. I love seeing someone I've only known in pictures come to life in video format! THanks, K

Super Kawaii Mama, you are so lovely! So poised and natural, just like k.line said. Thank you for taking the time to tape this for us.

Greetings from Bulgaria,

I love blogger videos because they add a whole new dynamic to someone I'd only previously "known" through still pictures. You are adorable and fun to watch! I wish I would've tried to do this last night, I went out and was hoping for a sort of punky look. I'll try next weekend :)

How cute are you!? I am so bummed that at the moment I have a VERY short 40s style bob going. My long hair would probably do this perfectly! I've also always loved the look...many girls where I live have the 40s thing going on. Thanks for tip...I'm growing my hair out now!

thanks so much for making this tutorial! i watched the whole thing and have to agree with the others here: i just love to see videos of bloggers i just "know" from pictures. you are so charming!

You are a star! Your hair always looks great! You should do your makeup as a video tutorial too (in your free time). I forgot to ask when you did your makeup post - What sunscreen do you use? You are so fair and living in Australia with two children, you must have to be outside in the sun. What is your secret?

I thank you for the tutorial but alas I'm still not skilled enough to attempt this...oh and the fringe sort of kills any hopes as well...

Great to hear you speak :D
Quite smart making a video, it still saves time compared to taking tutorial photos since it can be hard to get a good angle in the pictures at once...

Well, that does it....I'm growing my hair long again. Once again you've inspired me! Thanks for the lovely tutorial. I used to do the side twists as you showed, probably ten years ago now, and it was well worth the effort. I've not tried the front roll--yet! Can't wait for more tutorials. You do this very well!

Gilda: That's so funny. Last time I was in the States people kept asking me which country I was from!

Theresa: The trick with bobby pins is to get the right length ones for your hair, and then make sure you open them up, grabbing hair from both the section you want to pin and the foundation / underneath section too.

Cybill: Send me the results!

Tizz: Oh no! I'd email it if you really wanted it, but the file is pretty big. Maybe your computer will feel better tomorrow or perhaps just check for updates to your drivers.

K.Line: Thank you. I'm open to all and any offers for my own show ;) But until that happens I'll keep on entertaining you all here.

Valeria: Bulgaria, wow! (Don't you just love the power of the internet?)And thank you for your kind words.

Kelly: I know what you mean about actually seeing someone as opposed to just reading them. Give it a go, and I'd love to see the results.

Shelly: If you want some fabulous hair inspiration for short hair, check out this Flickr stream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/johanni/

Annabananna: Aww shucks, thanks lovely.

Leah: I thought that at the time of doing the makeup tutorial (it would have been A LOT easier) but my computer was being up graded and wouldn't cooperate. As for sunscreen I always use a 30+spf, and find a non greasy brand that doesn't make the makeup shiny. At the moment I am using one by Sothy's, but I also use a chemist brand too. The trick to picking the right one- try a few formulations on your inside arm, allow it a minute of two to rest, then head over to the makeup counter and apply a little of your type of foundation formula over the top. That way you get to see how it reacts. I always put on my sunscreen after my moisturiser then leave it all for 5 minutes / breakfast before I do my makeup.

Susie Bubble: I think if you added a little product to get the sides to grip, and then a hot tong on the fringe, you could achieve the same effect.

Freelancer:It sure does. Those photos and descriptions take forever.

Amy G: I do love the versatility of long hair, I cut mine off every now and again, but then I always go back to this as it is so much easier to maintain for me.

oh I miss hearing that Melbourne accent. I can't wait to get back there next month for a vacation.

Fabulous tutorial, you inspire me to get out of my jeans and doll myself up a little.

Firstly, you are even prettier on film. Secondly, i was a dancer and just love that you send your little one to ballet and thirdly Bumble and Bumble rock.... ever considered a career in TV presenting? oh and it was so nice to hear an Aussie accent on tele/mac. You're just so lovely. xfrancis

What a treat! I just discovered your site but a few days ago, and I was just thinking how lovely this would be to see a demo. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us your refreshing outlook to motherhood! You are absolutely charming! I was just contemplating growing out my hair-now I have inspiration. ^_^ Have a splendid day!

I love this video. You seem like such a sweet person :) I love your hair color as well. I'm showing this video to all my girlfriends and everyone on my myspace and facebook :)

A dreamer: I think I sound more Aussie because I didn't have my T.V voice on, and let myself use much of the slang that actually creeps in day to day.
Tonya: Make sure you pack warmly, it is freezing here.
Alicepleasance: Any time my friend.
Francis Girard: *blush* Oh thank you. I actually send Miss 4 to ballet in an attempt to have her behave a little more genteel. She seemed to be destined for a career in wrestling for a while there.
Jai: Thanks for joining me. There are sure to be more of these tutorials coming up. Feel free to email me if there is anything in particular you would like to see.
Imelda Matt: I do love a bit of poof.. in the hair, - it takes a girl closer to heaven.
Jillian Rueter: Thank you, and feel free to link to the tutorial if you like.

That was dope! I am sending the link to Bert Newton and Belvedere tout de suite (is he still on the air?)! You are way better than Genie Little... Not that she don't have flavour, but you know...

Can you make me a video of yourself with a cup of tea in your hand and just stare at the camera and say "Mmm I know, totally, I know!" and nod a bit and say "Oh you are so right on, tell it like it is!" and I will just play it to myself sometimes and pretend we are having a conversation? Thanks SKM, that'd be swell. :)

Just the other day I was admiring one of my friends 20's hairdo(the wavy look).

She graciously offered to styled my hair the same way.Though her hair is short and my hair is long I didn't think that my hair would look as good as hers.

Now that I came across your hair tutorial I have a new look that would work with my long locks!

Thanks,

Carmen Johnson

Lizziedee:I'm sure that can be arranged. :)
Carmen:Excellent. Happy to be of service. I tried to check out your blog, but in firefox your text is off centre and over the left hand black border - which means its illegible for me.

First- your accent is so adorable! :D

Second. This tutorial rules. Thank you! I use some similar rolling techniques in doing my own hair (blonde streak included, heh) but my hair is soooooo long- waist-length (& naturally stick-straight) at the moment. Ugh. It limits what I can do... even with hot rollers- because they just won't fit! I have been wanting to cut my hair shorter for awhile now but everyone always tells me not too! Watching all the cute things you did with your hair really made me want to cut my own hair even more though. Maybe I'll get the nerve to do it one of these days...

Super Kawaii Mama:

Thanks, for pointing out about my blog The Retrochic Corner being off center. I had thought that I had fix this problem. So last night I went ahead and made some adjustments. Hopefully that solved it.

By the way yesterday I did my hairdo. And I received plenty of complements!

Thanks, again.

You are awesome. I agree with everyone else - you should be on TV! So confident, but warm and friendly.

My hair is too prone to frizziness to try this :(

Anonymous said...

Oh, you are too gorgeous! I've been trying to get a hang of rolling my hair, except my layers are driving me insane!

Your voice sounds exactly like Charlie's on Home and Away!

x thanks!

Yes, you've been told this so many times, but it doesn't hurt to hear it again; You are too cute! You seem like SUCH a sweet person! You pull off the pin-up look so well.
